Wow. We Were Liars is one of those books that, if you can make it past the first few slower chapter, you are in for an excellent treat. The story centers on Cadence Sinclair and the rest of the Sinclair family. She is the first and oldest grandchild and the whole family spends their summers on the private island owned by her grandparents. Each family has their own home and run of the island; it is a spectacular sanctuary. The book picks up the year after Cadence has had a brain injury on the island following a dive off the rocky shore. Due to the brain injury, Cadence cannot remember anything about the previous summer. She returns to the island two years after her injury on the advice of her doctors and spends the summer trying to piece the story together. What follows is a quickly unfolding story that keeps the reader guessing until the very end.

Lockhart writes an incredible tale here and truly knows just how much information to give the reader to keep them wanting more. Full disclosure, I read this whole book in the matter of 3 hours on one afternoon. It is a perfect beach or poolside read. Lockhart's writing style is very easy to read and you truly feel as if you are inside the head of the characters. Her chapters flow into each other seamlessly, which can make it difficult to want to stop reading. This is a book that I think actually deserves all of the hype that it receives. I won't tell you more about this story, instead, I'll take the suggestion on the back of the book, which states: "If anyone asks you how it ends, just lie." So, in that vein, I will tell you that Cadence Sinclair and the rest of her family magically end up in an enchanted forest where they live happily for the rest of their lives. Don't believe me? Guess you'll just have to read it and see for yourself!
