My Review (Spoiler Free)
The Hating Game was my second foray into Contemporary Romance and it held up as a second choice. The Hating Game follows the office rivalry turned budding romance of Josh and Lucy, two executive assistants at a mid-sized publishing house. Lucy and Josh both worked for two publishers who could not be less alike and who ultimately are forced into a merger to save both companies. They work on the executive floor of their building and spend their days tending to the needs of their respective publishing heads. When a new position is created that would supervise the executive assistants and report directly to both publishing heads, even more tension is thrown onto the fire between Lucy and Josh.Â
Sally Thorne serves up a run of the mill enemies to lovers story with an added insight that shows that hating someone and loving someone are two sides of the same coin. Thorne's book will tug at heartstrings and have you rooting for the couple the whole time. The pacing is good for this book, but could have been slightly condensed in my opinion. The book could have been closer to 300 pages instead of almost 400. Thorne succeeds in creating two relatable and very believable characters and a story that nearly everyone will find something to identify with. At the end of the day, I did not find anything spectacularly new or different about this book. You get exactly what you expect from the title, cover, and description.
