Ready Player One is an expansive and immersive dystopian world that imagines humanity distracting itself by participating in a fully virtual reality while on the brink of death and destruction. Ernest Cline introduces us to Wade Watts, a teenager with a rough life and no money who, along with nearly everyone else in the world, spends the majority of his waking days logged into a virtual reality simulation, called the Oasis, that is thrust into chaos at the announcement of a treasure hunt to determine the heir of the large fortune and company of the Oasis' creator. This book is chock full of suspense, action, comedy, romance, and nostalgia. The treasure hunt, and the majority of the Oasis, is based around a love and longing for old pop culture: music, movies, games, and books.

Cline weaves a story that is unique and often delights the reader. For nearly every reference, Cline provides appropriate descriptions, including origins, so readers should not feel lost or left out. While some the described mechanics of the Oasis and general functioning in a virtual reality setting may be clunky at times, overall Ready Player One is a fun ride through an imaginary future and through an imaginary reality that would more than likely play out very similarly to what Cline writes.
