People We Meet on Vacation is a novel about friendships, redefining, and refinding yourself after college. The novel follows college best friends Poppy and Alex and their yearly summer trips that began in their Freshman summer of college. The book is classified as a romance and while there is a friends to lovers romantic subplot, I found the overarching story of figuring out adult life after college and navigating relationships to be the most compelling and relatable part of the story. The story is uniquely told in flashbacks to previous summer vacations. Through the flashbacks, and the parts of the story from the present, readers can see the lives of Alex and Poppy unfold and they deal with the increasing difficulties and pressures of adulthood. From moving to new cities, maintaining long-distance friendships, navigating relationships, and managing their careers, Alex and Poppy speak to the millennial mindset of dealing with the world, even while the world is unfathomable at times. People We Meet on Vacation also has a nicely passed romance plot that unfolds naturally and has the hallmarks of a good friends to lovers trope. This book is a great summer story.
